Jacobus Johannes van Staden
Introduction:
Jacobus Johannes van Staden was born on 13 October 1865 in Bloemhof. His parents were:
- Father: Martinius Jacobus van Staden
- Mother: Anna Cecilia van Staden
He belonged to a generation of pioneering Afrikaner farming families who witnessed the final decades of the Boer republics and the dramatic changes that shaped South Africa during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They were four groups apparently, one relocated to Lindleyspoort, other to Swartruggens, one group to Syferfontein and one to the Poort.
Family and church records indicate that Jacobus spent much of his life in the western Transvaal, particularly in the Rustenburg and Marico districts. At the time of his marriage, he was residing at Bulhoek near Rustenburg and was already established as a farmer. Throughout his life he remained closely connected to the agricultural communities of the western Transvaal.
Family traditions connect him with Bulhoek, Genadendal and the broader Marico region, areas that remained closely associated with the Van Staden family for generations.
On 31 January 1898, Jacobus married Elizabeth Johanna Maria Harmse in the Dutch reformed Congregation of Rustenburg. The marriage register records him as a 33-year-old farmer residing at Bulhoek in the Rustenburg district. Elizabeth, born 1880, was 18 years old at the time of their marriage and from Dwarsspruit. The marriage was concluded in community of property. The following children have been identified from available records:
- Marthinus Jakobus van Staden (4 Nov 1898)
- David Stephanus Francois van Staden (16 Nov 1902)
- Sophia Jacoba van Staden (28 Sept 1914)
They stayed in Genadendal, Marico, in the district Zeerust.
Together they raised a family during a period that included the Anglo-Boer War, the formation of the Union of South Africa, the First World War and the economic hardships of the Great Depression. Their descendants would later spread across the Marico, Rustenburg, Swartruggens and surrounding districts.
Jacobus spent his life as a farmer and family patriarch. The surviving records and family traditions portray him as one of the Van Staden pioneers whose descendants became deeply rooted in the western Transvaal.
Several family traditions have survived concerning Jacobus Johannes van Staden and his descendants.
Family members recalled connections to Genadendal in the Marico district and later settlements in Lindleyspoort, Swartruggens, Syferfontein and the Poort area.
Later generations also maintained strong links with Marikana, Derby and the greater Rustenburg district, suggesting that the family remained rooted in the western Transvaal for many decades.
These traditions provide valuable clues regarding the movement of various Van Staden branches but require further documentary verification.
He passed away in the Marico district during March 1948 at approximately 83 years of age at Genadendal, Marico district. His was buried at Lotteringskop, district Marico.
